Stories From Around Friartown

Stories from Around Friartown

1. Ben Bentil became the first Ghanian player to ever play in the NBA.

Bentil signed a 10-day contract with the Dallas Mavericks that just happened to fall in the window of Dirk Nowitzki scoring his 30,000th point to become just the 6 player in NBA history to achieve that feat.

2. Bryce Cotton won the Australian League Championship with the Perth Wildcats

Cotton led the Wildcats to their 8th League Championship, dropped 45 points in the title game (on just 17 shots), was named the Grand Finals MVP.  Cotton turned down multiple NBA offers (most likely 10-day contracts) to head over to Perth

3. Julian Gressel started in the first ever game for the Atlanta United FC in the MLS

The PC Men's Soccer alum started in the midfield for the team against the New York Red Bulls.  Atlanta fell in its first every match 2-1 but looked promising in their debut.  Since I don't currently have a favorite MLS team, I might have to start to favor Atlanta and perhaps check in on them periodically during the season now.

4. Rodney Bullock and Kyron Cartwright Take Home 2nd Team All-Big East Honors

Rodney Bullock finished the season 10th in scoring (16.1 ppg), 5th in rebounding (6.4 rpg), 10th in blocks (0.8 bpg), 11th in steals (1.2 spg), 15th in FT percentage (74.8%).

Kyron led the league in assists (6.8 apg) by 2.5 assists per game more than anyone else in the league.  He was also 2nd in the league in assist to turnover ratio, something he has always been good at.  Cartwright also snuck into the top 15 in steals in the league with 1.1 per game.  The part of the game that may have seen the biggest jump is in his scoring we he was 24th in the league with 11.3 points per game.

5. Bullock and Cartwright were also named to USBWA All-District 1st Team with Kyron being named Player of the Year

The USBWA All-District Teams are broken out by colleges that fall into each particular regional district.  District 1 consists of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Mass, and Connecticut.  There were 12 players selected to this district's team.  They usually have 10 players but in case of ties, they can have a few more

Jalen Adams, UConn
Evan Boudreaux, Dartmouth
Rodney Bullock, Providence
Kyron Cartwright, Providence
Anthony Lamb, Vermont
Tanner Leissner, New Hampshire
Hassan Martin, Rhode Island
E.C. Matthews, Rhode Island
Jerome Robinson, Boston College
Steven Speith, Brown
T. J. Williams, Northeastern
Nisre Zouzoua, Bryant

Kyron was named the player of the year in the district and Vermont Coach John Becker was named Coach of the Year.  I don't have a huge problem with Becker being named as Vermont was the first team to ever go undefeated in conference play in the American East, going 16-0.  We will see VT in the NCAA tournament most likely.

Twelve players does seem like a lot for an All-District Team.  If I were going to go with 5, I would probably have it as Kyron Cartwright, Jalen Adams, Rodney Bullock, Hassan Martin, and Steven Speith.
