Stories from Around Friartown
1) Providence #10 in Learfield Director's Cup Standings
The latest rankings for the Director's Cup came out and PC has pushed itself into the Top Ten in the rankings through the Fall seasons. This is an overall ranking based on all the sports at your College/University. Providence is by far the smallest school listed and the only non-football school in the Top Ten. Georgetown (15) and Villanova (49) are the only other two Big East schools in the Top 50.
Speaking of rankings, I'm always curious as to what Providence is looking like so far in most of the ranking systems...I think KenPom might be the most indicative of the quality of teams but the NCAA Committee looks at a bunch of these so it's a fun game to see where they stand as of today, even though we're only about 1/3 of the way through the season.
Rankings for the Friars so far:
AP Top 25 Poll: Not Ranked or Receiving Votes (I think that may change if they run the table before conference play)
USA Today Coaches Poll: Not Ranked or Receiving Votes (Same Here)
RPI - 19
Bracketology - 10 Seed in the East. PC made their first appearance in Bracketology and was one of 6 Big East teams that are currently being projected to make the NCAA Tournament field (Villanova - #1, Xavier #4, Creighton #4, Butler #4, Seton Hall #11)
KenPom - 51

2) A New Pick-n-Pop Podcast episode
Providence Journal writers Bill Koch and Kevin McNamara came out with the latest episode of their Pick-n-Pop Podcast that can be found on here. They currently have my favorite Podcast where they talk about Rhode Island College basketball, usually focusing on PC and URI but also touching on Brown and Bryant every once in a while.
I also listen to Mike Hopkins (writer for pcbb1917.com, my favorite PC basketball site) and Brendan McGair (writer for The Pawtucket Times and Woonsocket Call) on the Friartown Fan Voice Podcast and the Big East Coast Podcast. If the BECP can shake out their audio problem, I'll probably be giving that podcast some more time.
3) Fox Sports 1 had a Q&A with Coach Ed Cooley and got his thoughts on how this year's Friars team is doing so far.
4) Fun little video from Kyron Cartwright
Cartwright made a video talking to some students around the PC campus. It seems like it might have been filmed a little while ago but still good nonetheless. Those Freshman girls were trying so hard and that one who threw out the "Maliek" has some definite kudos from me on nailing that one.
5) New PC Men's Basketball Introduction Video
Whoever does the Introduction videos for PC really nailed this year's one.
And now for some Congratulations around Providence College...
6) Men's Ice Hockey Coach Nate Leaman notched his 250th career win.
Congrats to Coach Leaman!! Sorry, Congrats to National Championship Winning Coach Leaman!
7) Men's Soccer Player Julian Gressel named 1st Team All-American
Congrats to Senior Men's Soccer Captain Julian Gressel on being named a First Team All-American!
Gressel was also recently invited to the 2017 MLS Combine in January.
Danny Griffin and Joao Serrano were also named to the All-Great Lakes Region Third Team. I'm not quite sure why it would be to the Great Lakes Region, but congrats anyway.
8) Providence College Cross Country Coach Ray Treacy nominated for the American Distance FloTrack Coach of the Year.
PC Cross Country teams are still kicking some ass since I graduated.
9) Coach Colley Wishing PC Students Good Luck on Exams
