UConn Takes Down Dayton to Advance to the Puerto Rico Tip Off Finals with the True Arrival of Rodney Purvis

#17 UConn (3-0) 75 - Dayton Flyers (2-1) 64

Everybody welcome the real Rodney Purvis to the Huskies.  Purvis looked like a completely different player today as the UConn Huskies took on the Dayton Flyers in the semifinal of the Puerto Rico Tip Off this afternoon.  Purvis was infinitely more confident and seemed to be looking for his own offense in this game as opposed to the tentative nature he showed yesterday.  He was taking it hard to the hole and finishing strong all game.

Purvis finished with 19 points and put his name in the mix for a potential three-headed monster with Ryan Boatright (20 pts, 5 rebs, 4 assts, 3 stls) and Danny Hamilton (14 pts, 5 rebs).  Boatright was a magician out there playing an inside-outside game and seemingly coming up with a big bucket every single time the Huskies offense was sputtering and desperately in need of one. He's is exactly what this UConn team needs.  A leader and a guy who can create his own shot.

Hamilton still looked as un-Freshman-like as ever and continued to stroke it from three, going 3-5 from distance.  His defense looked really suspect as he was susceptible to cuts all game (especially down low) and had trouble fighting through screens. If he can be a little more consistent on D, it could really help out the team defense for UConn.  He was a liability on the defensive end tonight. That also had some to do with Amida Brimah and Phil Nolan being in foul trouble throughout the game, thus leaving Kenton Facey to get abused around the rim and shifting Hamilton to more of a down low presence, which he is not.

All around, it was a great game to watch and the emergence of Purvis makes me feel a lot better about the offensive production potential this team can have.  Still undefeated and heading to another tournament Championship...sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Some quick notes on the game:

  • Danny Hamilton needs to look up on the break.  He had open guys looking for the pass the whole first half.
  • How awesome was that Brimah block party.  Three rejections on one possession felt pretty good.
  • Why does Samuel think he can all of a sudden shoot threes now?
  • UConn is officially Point Guard U.
  • I just want to make sure I have UConn's low post offense down.
    • 1) Get good postition
    • 2) Get good entry pass
    • 3) Take two dribbles
    • 4) Throw it over your outside shoulder and hope it hits the rim
    • 5) Call for the ball the next time down and repeat
Next Up, the Huskies take on the winner of Boston College and West Virginia in the Puerto Rico Tip Off Championship on Sunday.
