NY Giants Draft Profile: Nat Berhe

Round: 5
Pick: 12
Position: S
College: San Diego State Aztecs

As we get later and later in the rounds of the draft, I get less and less familiar with any of these guys, so I'm going off of stuff I read about their games, can decipher from their stats, and what they look like in highlights (probably good because they're freaking highlights afterall).

The Giants and GM Jerry Reese decided to approach the middle-to-late rounds of this draft a lot differently than they have in the past.  If you read Bill Barnwell on Grantland (and you should), you may have read about the last couple years of the Giants' draft history and how absolutely terrible it has been with injuries and careers.  Apparently, they only draft people with the thinnest ACLs in the business.  You can check it out here.

This year, the Giants targeted character guys and a ton of team captains to fill out their rookie class.  Unlike guys they've drafted over the last couple years, these guys seem to have already come close to where their ceiling as players is going to end up, but should be able to contribute somewhere on an NFL roster.  It's better to have guys who can play than to have guys with upside who can't stay on the field or on a least let's hope so.

With the Giants cutting ties with problem child Will Hill, who will be suspended for the first 6 games of the season and the third time in three years, Berhe might actually see some playing time on the back-end of the defense in some packages (probably some nickel), so let's hope he's ready.  He played a sort of hybrid linebacker/safety position in college at SD State so he seems to be adaptable to different schemes and positions, which is always a plus.

  • He is the first Eritrean player selected in the NFL draft.  Don't know what that is?  Neither did I.  Apparently it's a country in the Horn of Africa.  Who knew?
  • Team Captain at San Diego State.
  • Led the Aztecs in tackles his senior year with 99.
  • His reaction to getting drafted by the Giants was great.  I love guys with a chip on their shoulder who want to shove it in the face of teams that passed on them.

As long as Berhe doesn't end up getting tased like Tyler Sash did on a scooter or constantly suspended like Will Hill, I think he'll be alright.

His highlight reel is just pretty good, but it's harder to have anything for a Safety unless it's a big hit or an INT.
